What is Matcha?Β

🍡🍡🍡

Matcha is a nourishing powder of green tea leaves that people enjoy as a drink (and also enjoy in their skincare) around the world today. However, contrary to what people may think of Matcha being a Japanese Tea, its history can be traced back to China during the Tang and Song Dynasties. How did this tea make it to Japan? History has given credit to a Japanese Buddhist Monk who was visiting China during the Song dynasty. He discovered Matcha in China and brought it back to his country Japan. And then over time, the modern world arrived, and matcha became a popular trend.

Matcha evolved to being grown and harvested in ways to produce different cultivars. To understand cultivars, think of the different types of apples; a similar principle to matcha varieties. Matcha cultivars include being "shade-grown, de-veined, de-stemmed" (JustMatcha, 2020).Β

Grateful for MatchaπŸ’žπŸ€—

I remember attending a seminar presented by an expert on cancer and healing during my college years. I learned from the presenter that quality Japanese green teas are healing as a preventative but also healing for those who have cancer.

Matcha benefits include:

-rich in antioxidants
-is anticancer
-more chlorophyll than green tea
-promotes clear and youthful skin
-good for blood, heart, and joint health

Virtueberry sources its matcha for its Matcha Mud Scrub from a local Canadian store in Victoria, BC, which Tiffanie and her husband Kip named "JustMatcha". I learned that Kip switched from being a huge coffee drinker after one week of drinking matcha, and he felt great. And although Tiffanie has described herself as always have been a tea granny, she now prioritizes matcha as her number one favourite tea. Their store-with all things matcha-offers a wonderful range of different matcha grades to choose from.

JustMatcha offers different levels of matcha cultivar:

Bronze - Standard ceremonial grade. Complex, slightly astringent

Silver - Connoisseur grade. Lighter, floral notes, mild astringency.

Gold - Imperial grade. Deep, earthy notes, rich smooth finish.

Platinum - Emperor grade. Unique, savory, deep noble finish.

The top 3 things Tiffanie & her husband love about matcha:

  1. The feeling of wakeful calmness - (this is derived from the amino acid and L-theanine combined with caffeine) 静か

  2. The principles of tea harmony, respect, purity and tranquility. ε’Œγ‚„γ‹

  3. Connecting to matcha drinkers - communityΒ ε…¬ε…±

Matcha Mud Scrub πŸ’ž

Recently, a few people have talked about the importance of self compassion during this difficult time. During these high times of uncertainty in life, due to lockdowns and more, how are we treating ourselves? Self compassion is not always easy, especially when negative emotions come at us in life. Sometimes allowing ourselves to have conversations with others can help, as well as treating ourselves kindly in what we choose to put on our skin and choose to digest. Guilt free products start with awareness that they are made by ethically minded people who care beyond the sale price (see previous blog post on what is beauty and wellness?).

So when you are looking to support localπŸ’ž and/or artisanπŸ’ž and/or try something that promotes health and wellbeingπŸ’ž for ChristmasπŸ’ž or beyondπŸ’ž, consider trying some matcha from JustMatcha or a Matcha Mud Scrub from Virtueberry. You'll love it! πŸ’ž And your future self will thank you. Thank you!
